Oysters

Alaska Gold

Alaska Gold Oysters are cultivated in the pristine waters of Heceta Island, a remote uninhabited island in South Eastern Alaska near Prince of Wales Island. Owner Mike Sheets Jr. is among a handful of pioneering Alaskan oyster farmers who believe that their uniquely pristine products will be the future of shellfish production in the US.Alaska Gold oysters are a suspension cultivated oyster, which means they never come in contact with the sandy/muddy ocean floor. Instead, they remain suspended above the bottom, feeding off the nutrient rich waters of the region. Like the Kusshi oyster, they are also tumbled on a regular basis, though I think it is less frequently than the Kusshi because the Alaska Gold shells are more delicate. This tumbling technique gives the oysters a unique manicured look, with a consistent tear-drop shape and very deep cups.
