Longfin squid caught in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic with bottom trawls is a "Good Alternative" The stock is considered healthy, but it's unknown if overfishing is occurring. Bycatch of loggerhead turtles is a serious concern even though the number caught is low compared to other fisheries. Management is moderately effective, but the measures to mitigate this fishery’s habitat impacts could be improved. As both predator and prey, squid play an important role in the marine food web, and recent independent research on this issue is encouraging.

Indian squid caught in India and Thailand with otter trawls is on the "Avoid" list. The conservation measures for these fisheries are rated ineffective, and no information on bycatch is collected. Based on similar fisheries around the world, bycatch likely includes corals, turtles, marine mammals, sharks and other species. In addition, there are no effective measures to mitigate habitat impacts. As both predator and prey, squid play an important role in the marine food web, and the ecosystem impacts of removing squid from coastal systems are unknown. The status of squid stocks is also unknown.
